The reason most interns struggle to study for the ExAC is not the volume of material and it is not a lack of intelligence. It is that they study the exam like a knowledge test when it is nothing of the kind. The Examination for Architects in Canada is a practice based exam. It assesses the judgement you built during your internship, and it rewards recall and application, not recognition. Study it the way you studied for a university final and you will spend a hundred hours feeling productive and remember very little of it in the exam room.
This guide is about method rather than schedule. It covers what kind of exam the ExAC actually is, what the research on memory says about studying for it, a study loop built on that evidence, how to triage your references so you are not drowning, and how to choose a prep approach that fits how you work. Why the ExAC changes how you should study
The exam is administered once a year over two consecutive days, on paper, and it is built to test whether you have absorbed the competencies of practice, not whether you can quote the source documents. The experience requirement behind it is real: candidates reach the exam after roughly 3,720 hours of recorded architectural experience across programming, documentation, contract administration, and practice management. The exam checks that the experience stuck.
That has a direct consequence for study strategy. A question rarely asks you to state a fact. It asks you to decide. Which contract fits a construction management delivery method. Whether a situation calls for a site instruction or a change order. Whether the architect is providing general review or something the architect never provides. What the research says about how memory actually works
Cognitive psychologists have spent decades measuring which study techniques work and which only feel like they work. The most useful summary for our purposes is a review by Dunlosky and colleagues, published in 2013, which evaluated ten common study techniques and rated each for real world utility. Two techniques stood out above the rest, and both map directly onto good ExAC preparation.
Retrieval practice is the highest return activity you have
The single most effective thing you can do is test yourself. Pulling an answer out of your own head, without looking, changes the memory in a way that rereading never does. The foundational study here is Roediger and Karpicke in 2006. Students read prose passages, then either reread them or took short recall tests with no feedback. On a test five minutes later, the rereaders did slightly better. But on delayed tests at two days and one week, the students who had tested themselves retained substantially more, and the gap widened with time.
The uncomfortable part of that study is the confidence data. The students who reread felt more prepared than the students who tested themselves, and they were wrong. This is the illusion of competence, and it is the trap that catches ExAC candidates. Rereading the CCDC suite until it feels familiar produces a warm sense of mastery that evaporates under exam pressure. Spaced practice beats cramming for the same hours
The other high utility technique is distributed practice, better known as spacing. The finding is consistent and slightly counterintuitive: the same total study time produces stronger long term retention when it is spread across many sessions than when it is packed into a few. Three hours a week for twelve weeks beats a heroic thirty six hour fortnight, even though the hours are identical. Forgetting a little between sessions and then retrieving the material again is what makes it stick.
This is the evidence behind studying over months rather than weeks, and it is why the calendar matters. It is a memory technique in its own right.
The techniques most interns rely on are the weakest
The same 2013 review rated rereading, highlighting, and summarising as low utility for most learners. They are the default study habits almost everyone brings from school, and they are close to the bottom of the evidence. Highlighting a page feels like progress and produces almost none. If your study sessions consist mainly of reading and marking up documents, you are working hard on the wrong thing.
Two further techniques rated as moderately useful are worth folding in. Interleaving, which means mixing topics within a session rather than studying one theme to exhaustion before moving on, helps you learn to tell similar concepts apart, which is precisely what the exam demands when it puts a change order and a change directive in the same question. Elaboration, which means asking yourself why something is true and explaining it in your own words, turns a memorised fact into a reasoned one. Neither is as powerful as retrieval or spacing, but both cost nothing to add.
A study method built on the evidence
Put those findings together and a method falls out of them. Run this loop for each theme, and run it more than once across your study window so the spacing does its work.
- Orient. Before reading a theme in depth, skim it and take a short diagnostic. A few questions you mostly fail tells your brain what to pay attention to and makes the reading that follows far more efficient.
- Triage and read the core. Read the primary source for that theme once, with attention, not four times on autopilot. Reading is for building the model. It is not where retention happens.
- Synthesise by theme. Close the book and write the logic of the theme in your own words. This is elaboration, and it exposes the gaps that rereading hides. A structured guide can save you this step for the heavier themes, since the synthesis is already done.
- Retrieve. Answer scenario questions from memory, without notes. Mark what you miss. This is the hour that actually moves your score.
- Mock under a clock. Once per section, sit a full timed mock so pacing and stamina are trained, not just content.
- Fix and space. Feed the questions you missed back into your next session, a few days later. The delay is the point.
Notice what this loop is not. It is not reading the CCDC suite from front to back three times. Reading has one job here, which is to build the initial model. Everything after that is retrieval and repair.
Triage your references so you are not drowning
Between the Handbook, the code, the energy code, the contract suite, and the supplementary readings, the source material runs to several thousand pages. You cannot read all of it with equal attention and you should not try. Sort it into core and supporting, read the core deeply, and use the supporting material to answer specific questions as they come up.

Two of these reward a specific tactic rather than more reading. Before you finalise your reading list, confirm nothing has shifted for the current cycle by checking what changed on the 2026 ExAC. The framework is stable year to year, but the referenced documents can move.
Turn the method into a dated plan
A method with no calendar tends to collapse after the second weekend. Once you know how you are going to study, the next step is to decide when, working backward from your exam date so the spacing is built in rather than hoped for. Rather than repeat the week by week structure here, use the realistic 12 week study schedule, which maps the themes, hour estimates, and self testing milestones onto a plan you can adapt to your own sitting date.
Choosing how you prep
There are four broad ways interns prepare, and they are not equal for everyone.
Pure self study from the raw source documents is the cheapest and the slowest. It works if you have the discipline to build your own synthesis and the time to do it, and it fails quietly when a full time job eats the hours you planned to spend organising material.
Live webinar courses add structure and accountability, but they run on someone else's schedule and lean on your attendance. They suit people who learn best when a session is booked in the calendar and someone is waiting.
Raw question banks give you the retrieval practice that the research rates so highly, which is genuinely valuable, but a bank of questions with no teaching behind it leaves you drilling without understanding why an answer is right.

The honest answer is that most people who pass use a combination: one organised source of truth for the content, plus heavy retrieval practice on top. What you want to avoid is a pile of unstructured PDFs and a highlighter, which is the setup the evidence says works least well.
The study mistakes that fail interns
The candidates who come up short rarely do so because the material was beyond them. They lose on study behaviour. The recurring patterns are worth naming so you can catch yourself.
The first is mistaking reading for studying, covered above. The second is underweighting the practice and contract material, which is dense and easy to postpone, and then running out of time for the section that carries the most questions. The third is skipping timed mocks, so the first time you feel exam pace is on exam day. The fourth is studying each theme once, in a block, with no return visits, which throws away the spacing effect entirely.
